Mission Group Returns From Arizona - March 6 - 13

A group of eleven college students from Newman Catholic Campus Ministry at Baldwin‐Wallace College and The College of Wooster were on a mission trip to
Arizona over their Spring Break March 6 – 13, 2010.
As part of their Alternative Service Break these volunteers began the renovation of two apartments on the property of the priests’ residence that are used regularly by guests and volunteers.  Volunteers enjoyed swinging the sledge hammer to knock down walls, tear out old, dirty carpeting and add a fresh, clean coat of paint.  The group was able to celebrate daily Mass at the parish before starting their work each morning, and every evening they gathered for prayer during which they shared personal reflections on the day’s activities and interactions.  In one short week, volunteers had so many opportunities for hand‐on learning about Blessed Kateri Parish, the local community, and the Native American cultures of the Pascua Yaqui and the Tohono O’odham.  The group was able to get to know many people in the community at Blessed Kateri as well as Santa Rosa and Cristo Rey.  A brief visit to the Saguaro National Park provided impressive vistas and a close up look at hundreds of cacti. Everyone was especially grateful to be able to participate in the unique Yaqui Lenten Ceremonies celebrated during the Lenten
Season.
